Your Child's Opinion Is Key to Their Development

At Petit Folks, we believe that listening to and respecting children’s voices is essential. But you’ve probably heard phrases like these:

“You’re not doing it right.”
“Let me do it for you.”
“Listen to the grown-ups; they know better.”

Sometimes, without realizing it, we take away children’s chance to discover, explore in their own way, and learn from experience. It’s natural to want to help, but when we insist that everything be done “correctly”—or our way—we limit their confidence and autonomy.

Why is it so important to listen to children?

  1. It boosts their confidence and sense of belonging.
When we value their opinions, we show them that their perspective matters. This helps them build strong self-esteem and feel like an active part of the family and their environment.
  2. It encourages creativity and autonomy.
We give them the freedom to think for themselves, try something new, or learn at their own pace, which is essential for developing healthy and secure independence.
  3. It improves communication and eases coexistence.
By listening to all opinions, even those of the youngest, it becomes easier to mediate conflicts and reach agreements. Children learn that their ideas are welcome, strengthening trust and family communication.

The impact of not listening
When we ignore their opinions or decisions about seemingly “small” things, we unintentionally send the message that their voice doesn’t matter. This can make it harder for them to trust their own decisions—or others—when facing important choices in the future. Respecting their voice now is an investment in confident, independent adults.

This is why, at Petit Folks, we strive to give children a voice and their own space, allowing them to express their preferences, like when they want to sing that song we’ve memorized but keep asking for over and over again.

The next time your child wants to try doing something their way, encourage them by giving them that space! You’ll see their confidence blossom as they learn through their own discoveries.
