Why words can’t calm a tantrum

I'm sure you've been there: your child is completely overwhelmed emotionally, you try to reason, explain things calmly, use the perfect words... and nothing works.
They aren't ignoring you. It's simply that a child's brain doesn't balance itself through logic; it regulates through physical sensations. When the nervous system gets overloaded, the logical brain shuts down. The only things the brain can process at that moment are touch, movement, voice tone, and rhythm.
To navigate emotions in childhood, we must involve the body.
Moving together, a firm hug, pausing with a gentle sound, or swaying to a familiar melody are tools for deep regulation. Music and active play act directly on sensory systems, restoring calm where long explanations cannot reach.
Our musical resources are created with this in mind too: to build spaces for transition, active play, and physical reconnecting when the day gets bumpy.
