Why we listen to Petit Folks… and many other things at home

Something funny happened at home recently.
We played a punk version of a song my kids have known for a long time.
The lyrics were the same.
The melody… more or less the same too.
But the style was completely different.
And they were fascinated.
They laughed, sang along, tried to keep up with the rhythm… and I realized something really beautiful:
for them, it was almost like discovering the song all over again.

And that made me think about something we sometimes forget.
In childhood, listening to a wide variety of music is really important.

Because every musical style trains the ear in a different way:
– different rhythms
– new instruments
– varied structures
– languages they don’t know…

And all of that helps the brain develop important skills:
– sound discrimination
– recognizing rhythmic patterns
– improving auditory memory
– developing attention
– better language processing

Some studies even link exposure to different rhythms with better phonological awareness—a key skill for when they start learning to read.

Simply put:
when kids listen to a wide variety of music… their brains learn to listen better.

That’s why, at home and at school, it can be a good idea to open up the musical spectrum a bit.
You don’t need anything complicated. Sometimes just changing the kind of music playing at home is enough.

At Petit Folks, we really believe in musical diversity.
That’s why our songs include different rhythms, styles, and instruments.
But if I’m honest… at home we don’t only listen to Petit Folks.
The more diverse the soundscape they hear, the more their ears get trained. And it can be so much fun.

If you don’t listen to Petit Folks at home yet, here’s an easy way: just put on the radio on our app (it’s free 😉).
