Toys for Girls or Boys? Better Yet, Toys for Everyone!
Share
At Petit Folks, we believe in free and authentic play, where every child can enjoy themselves without labels. Because, even though we’ve come a long way, those clichés we all know still linger:
Soccer or dance?
Blue or pink?
Ball or doll?
Did you guess which gender is typically associated with each word? This happens because gender stereotypes are still present in children’s lives, in extracurricular activities, their clothes, and yes, even their toys.
Sometimes, almost without thinking, we keep giving boys superheroes, cars, and balls, while girls get dolls, princess costumes, and toy shopping carts. We know things have changed, but there’s still work to be done.
Why is it important to reflect on this?
Because toys are also tools for building identity, self-esteem, and a vision for the future. If a boy only receives “superhero” toys, he might think he has to be strong and never cry. If a girl only receives “princess” toys, she might believe she must be delicate or always “pretty.” Nothing could be further from the truth.
The Opportunity for Change
Nowadays, there are plenty of toy options that break away from these gender stereotypes. So, when thinking about your next gift, don’t just focus on the fun or learning it brings—consider how it will shape their sense of self and their role in society.
