Have you ever noticed how often, without realizing it, we want little ones to be 'bigger'? It comes so naturally to us, from encouraging them to learn quickly to wanting them to understand the world as we adults do. But if there is something magical about childhood, it is that freedom to discover, to play without rules, and to enjoy every little moment.
It's true, girls and boys also have that natural instinct to imitate adults. I'm sure you've seen your little one 'cooking' in their toy kitchen, playing doctor, or imitating the gesture of 'talking on the phone' with any old phone (or a cucumber, it doesn't matter!) And that's how they understand and explore the world!
But there is a big difference between letting them explore the world through play and placing expectations on them that they may not need at their age. Sometimes, the rush of life can lead us to structure every moment of their day, even their playtime, or skip stages or move too quickly through them. That’s when, without meaning to, we lose sight of something essential: allowing them to simply be girls and boys.
One way we can connect with them and their childlike essence is through children's songs. Besides being a great opportunity to learn and have fun, they create a space for bonding, simplicity, and connection with the present. Simple melodies, gestures, rhythms... all of this helps them stay in that world full of curiosity and joy. And when we let them sing, dance, and play what they enjoy, without rushing, we are giving them the best gift we can give them!
So, perhaps our mission is to remind them – and remind ourselves – that childhood has its own rhythm, and there is no rush. Let's give them the space to explore, play, and sing without any expectations. Because in those little moments is where they truly grow and where they find their place in the world.
