Parenting Educates Us Too

Parenting Educates Us Too

There’s an idea that has been with me a lot lately:
raising a child is one of the greatest invitations we have to grow in emotional maturity.

Not because it happens automatically.
Not because simply becoming a parent makes us “better.”

But because parenting creates a very particular context…
and those who are willing to listen to it learn a great deal.

Parenting means living every day with:
the constant interruptions to our plans,
the real needs of another person who depends on you,
the gap between how you imagined it would be… and how it actually is.

And all of that, if we don’t look away, places deep learning right in front of us.

Learning to regulate ourselves when we are tired.
To repair after conflict.
To care for others without forgetting to care for ourselves.
To revisit old wounds that appear just when we least expect them.
To find meaning and connection in days that, from the outside, seem “ordinary.”

At home, I see it most in the simplest moments.

When we sing the same song for the tenth time.
When play lasts longer than I had planned.
When I need to slow down, adjust expectations, and simply be present.

There, without big speeches, parenting teaches me.
And music and play become unexpected allies.

At Petit Folks, we believe in that too:
in play that doesn’t only accompany children,
but that, without us even noticing,
transforms us a little as well.

Because parenting isn’t only about guiding. Sometimes, it’s about letting ourselves be guided.
