Music as a Bridge Between Languages!

Music as a Bridge Between Languages!

At home, we speak Catalan, but my little ones are learning Spanish from their environment (and, of course, with the songs from Petit Folks). So we could say that they are bilingual. And this has made me reflect on a very interesting topic: what happens when we introduce a second or even a third language from such a young age?

One thing I’ve learned is that it’s not about our little ones starting to speak fluently at 2 or 3 years old (I wish!). In reality, what we’re aiming for is for them to get familiar with intonation, pronunciation, and to recognize some words… In short, to lay a solid foundation so that later on, it will be much easier and more natural for them to speak other languages.

And this is where music plays an incredible role. Through songs, little ones learn so naturally that they don’t even realize what language they are singing in. In fact, did you know that until the age of 3, they often mix languages without differentiating them? This means that any word they learn now, in whatever language, is a step forward!

If you’re considering incorporating English at home, take a look at our themed boxes with traditional songs in English.
